New TxTag customer service provider coming in 2025
The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) to collect tolls on TxDOT roadways and manage TxTag customer accounts.
TxTag Transition FAQs
TxTag will transition to a new customer service provider in 2025. TxTag will be using the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) to collect tolls on TxDOT roadways in the Austin and Houston metro areas and manage TxTag customer accounts. If you have any questions as we make this transition to a new system that are not addressed below, please contact us via online chat or phone.
Why is TxTag switching to a new tolling and customer service provider?
To help provide the best service for our customers, simplify billing, and improve the performance and reliability of our toll system, TxTag will be transitioning toll collection and customer service operations to the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA).
When will the TxTag transition happen?
Transitioning tolling services to HCTRA will happen over a phased-in period and is expected to be completed in January 2025. We’ll keep providing updates on TxTag.org and send notifications to customers as we get closer to completing the transition.
Can I still use my TxTag?
Yes. You will be able to continue using your TxTag to pay tolls on all toll roads in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Just ensure that your TxTag is installed in your vehicle, your account information is up to date, and your account has enough money in it to cover the cost of your tolls.
I have an active TxTag account. Do I need to do anything now?
We recommend that you log in to your account and confirm that your address, vehicle information, and any credit cards on your account are up to date. It’s also important that you pay any overdue toll bills.
I have a TxTag account but haven’t used it in more than 12 months. Do I need to do anything now?
Yes. Please call the TxTag Customer Service Center at 1-888-468-9824 before September 1, 2024, if you haven’t used your TxTag in more than a year but would like to keep your TxTag account active. If you don’t contact us, your account will be closed and any money in it will be refunded to you.
I don’t have a TxTag and receive toll bills in the mail. Do I need to do anything now?
To avoid bill confusion after the transition, it’s important to resolve any overdue toll bills as soon as possible. It’s also not too late to sign up for a TxTag account to start paying the lowest toll rates.
What will change when HCTRA starts providing tolling and customer services?
- TxTag customers will manage their account and view their statements through HCTRA’s website. Prior to the transition, we’ll provide TxTag customers with instructions on how to log in to their account on hctra.org.
- HCTRA will be responsible for collecting tolls on these TxDOT-owned toll roads: SH 130, SH 45N, SH 45SE, and Mopac/Loop 1 in Austin and SH 99 (Grand Parkway) and SH 249 in the Houston area. After the transition, HCTRA’s policies and fees related to unpaid tolls will go into effect.
- HCTRA will send invoices that include toll charges on roads owned by TxDOT or HCTRA to customers with unpaid tolls. The invoice will include instructions on how to pay the bill online, by mail, in person, or over the phone.
What if I do not want my TxTag account information transferred to HCTRA?
You must notify us by calling the TxTag Customer Service Center at 1-888-468-9824 before September 1, 2024, if you do not want your account information transferred to HCTRA. Prior to the transition you will receive a refund of any money in your TxTag account and will no longer be able to use your TxTag to pay tolls.
Will I have to get an EZ TAG after the transition to HCTRA?
TxTag customers will be able to continue to use their TxTag after the switch to HCTRA. If you need a new sticker tag after the transition—for example, if you purchase a new vehicle—you can obtain an EZ TAG from HCTRA or a TollTag from NTTA. Any of these tags can be used to pay tolls on toll roads in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
Why should I get a TxTag before the switch to HCTRA?
Getting a TxTag now will ensure that you continue to pay the lowest rates on all toll roads in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas after HCTRA takes over toll collection. After the transition, if you don’t have a prepaid toll account and fail to pay your tolls, HCTRA will send a violation invoice with a $10 administrative fee in accordance with their toll violations policy.
Will there still be in-person customer service help available in Austin?
Yes. Walk-in customer service will still be available in the Austin area and under this partnership will be expanded to the Houston area.
Who will own the toll roads and set the tolls?
TxDOT will continue to own and maintain its current toll roads and toll equipment.
Will toll rates increase?
Toll rates will not be affected as a result of the transition. The Texas Transportation Commission will continue to set rates for TxDOT-owned toll roads.
Why did TxDOT select HCTRA and what is their role?
HCTRA will act as an independent contractor and will replace TxDOT’s internally managed back-office system. TxDOT determined that partnering with HCTRA would provide the following benefits: enhanced customer support, more consistent toll billing practices across the state, and better toll system performance and reliability.
